What Is Complete Dentistry?

Complete dentistry is an approach to dentistry that doesn’t focus on one specific area of dental care, but instead, treats the whole patient. This means that we look beyond treating your teeth and make sure the rest of your mouth is healthy, too. Complete dentistry also examines the health of the gums and other soft tissues of the mouth, the tongue, and the muscles of the jaw. Complete dentistry takes a deeper look to ensure all mechanical functions of the mouth and jaw are working properly and that all tissues and structures are healthy.

Complete dentistry also means understanding how treating one part of the mouth affects the rest of the mouth. This means that restorations and other interventions are carefully planned to minimize impact and stress on the TMJ and the muscles of the jaw. Additionally, we look at how problems with the TMJ and the jaw muscles can cause issues with the bite, headaches, neck and jaw pain, and impact dental restorations.

What Happens During a Complete Dental Exam?

During your complete dental exam, we will visually and manually inspect your mouth to look for areas of concern. We look for signs of tooth decay and periodontal disease and check for any abnormalities in surrounding soft tissues and jaw muscles.

We will check for alignment of the bite, looking for signs of uneven wear and damage caused by misalignment. We also take the time to inspect the TMJ to ensure they are balanced.

Connecting the Body and the Mouth

We know that the health of your mouth and the health of your teeth are a vital part of your overall health. Dental problems and oral health issues can result in serious issues and illnesses elsewhere in the body. We also recognize that many illnesses and diseases can negatively impact the health of the mouth, too. As a result, we take into consideration your whole health history; reviewing any symptoms you may be experiencing and any medications you’re taking, your diagnosed or underlying health conditions, and your behavioral habits, like your diet and if you smoke or use tobacco productions.

Patients with headaches or migraines, neck pain, shoulder pain, and jaw issues, all benefit from complete dentistry. Whether it’s pain or TMJD issues, Ageless Dentures and cosmetic dentistry, or neuromuscular analysis and correction, we focus on treating the whole patient to find the root cause of your pain. Once identified, we design a personalized treatment plan to make sure you are both healthy and smiling.

Dr. George has the philosophy and approach of treating the whole patient through complete dentistry and applies complete dental practices when treating patients for neuromuscular dental problems, dental restorations, and TMJD treatment.
