Sedation dentistry can be used for every kind of dental treatment- from a simple tooth cleaning to surgical dental implant procedures.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a form of dentistry that uses medication to help patients relax and have an anxiety free experience during their dental treatment. Sedation dentistry is a great option for patients who are afraid of the dentist, giving them the ability to have necessary dental work done but without pain or fear.
During sedation dentistry, patients are given a sedative drug, like tranquilizers, or anti-anxiety medications. These drugs are either taken orally or delivered through an IV. Most of these drugs allow the patient to stay awake, but in a pain-free state, during their procedure.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Sedation dentistry, when administered by experienced professionals, is very safe. At Dr. George’s office, we use only board-certified, licensed anesthesiologists to administer sedation. Depending upon the procedure or procedures you are having, sedation can last only a few minutes to a few hours.
While sedation dentistry is very safe, there are some patients who should talk to Dr. George to see if sedation dentistry is a good option for them. Some health conditions, including obstructive sleep apnea and obesity, can cause complications from the anesthesia used during sedation.
